Data Description
The Postcode Locality file relates UK Postcodes to their double dependent locality, dependent locality and Post Town as defined by Royal Mail. The product is split into two parts as follows:
1. A database of all 1.7 million Postcodes and their respective Postally Required localities. This file includes only those localities that Royal Mail deem necessary for the efficient delivery of mail and therefore does not include all localities which are in common usage. This database is supplied split into 2 equal files to allow the data to be opened in Microsoft Excel version 2007 and later only.
2. A Postcode Sector level list which includes all Postally Required and Postally NOT Required (PNR) Localities for the UK at Postcode Sector level. As the data is at Sector level, there may be multiple localities associated with the same Postcode Sector resulting in duplicate Postcode Sector records in the file.
This data is sourced from the latest Royal Mail PAF data.

Postcode Definition
The Full Postcode is the Postcode as most people would generally know and love it as written on envelopes for mailing purposes. (e.g. UB7 0EB). There are approximately 1.7 million Full Postcodes covering the UK.
Postcode Sector Definition
A Postcode Sector is everything bar the last two letters of the Postcode (e.g. UB7 0 from UB7 0EB). There are over 9,000 Postcode Sectors covering the UK - Sectors are used for more local and detailed mapping and analysis.
Localities
A locality is a geographical area. Currently PAF holds details of approximately 30,000 localities within the UK.
A locality consists of a Post Town, with Dependent Locality and Double Dependent Locality further defining the geographic area where required.
The Post Town will always be present, i.e. all Localities have a Post Town. For some localities this will be the only element present. A Double Dependent Locality (a locality within a Dependent Locality) can only be present when a Dependent Locality is present.
