Berkshire‚¬„¢s northern edge runs for more than 100 miles along the south bank of the Thames from Windsor in the east. The Berkshire Downs rise to about 1,000 feet in the west providing beautiful and wooded riversides to Reading. The prehistoric Ridgeway runs along the Berkshire Downs where the famous White Horse of Uffington is the major landmark. The main town is Reading although historically the county town is Abingdon where the Shire Hall is one of the earliest and finest examples of seventeenth century public halls. Windsor is dominated by Windsor Castle: the largest castle in Britain and the largest inhabited castle in the world!
